The CHPG pharmacy is an in-house pharmacy, in other words it dispenses exclusively to patients of the hospital, with the exception of medicines which can be sold directly to the public.
HEAD OF SERVICE: Dr Catherine CUCCHI
AREAS OF ACTIVITY:
The primary role of the hospital’s in-house pharmacy is to procure, stock and dispense medicines, thereby ensuring a secure medication circuit. It also manages the circulation of sterile and implantable medical devices intended for patients.
The hospital’s medication circuit is computerised. All prescriptions are validated within the system, allowing medicines to be dispensed to individual patients by computer on a daily basis (or three times a week for long-stay patients).
The pharmacy also manages the Central Sterilisation Service where the medical devices used by the various operating theatres and technical facilities are sterilised.
• to manage, procure, stock and dispense to individual patients on a daily basis officially approved medicines and medicines listed in the care guidelines;
• to manage, procure and ensure traceability of sterile and implantable medical devices;
• to manage and dispense medical gases.
ROLE OF THE UNIT:
Its ancillary roles are:
• to manage, prepare, dispense and ensure traceability of cytostatic medicines in a specialist unit (the Cytostatic Reconstitution Unit);
• to issue to the public special medicines known as “hospital-only medicines” (a list of medicines for hospital use only that can be prescribed to patients being discharged);
• to issue medicines listed in the Princess Grace Hospital care guidelines to eligible persons and medical staff;
• to manage and monitor clinical trials in accordance with clinical best practice;
• to manage the Central Sterilisation Service.
Its cross-disciplinary roles are:
• to participate in institutional working groups (Infection Control Committee, Pain Management Committee, Food and Nutrition Liaison Committee, Antibiotics) and in state-accredited nurse training;
• to prepare medicines and medical equipment for emergency plans and events in the Principality.
INFORMATION:
The pharmacy does not dispense medicines that can be purchased from regular chemists. Patients who are given a prescription when discharged from the hospital should seek advice from the hospital department or from the pharmacy regarding which specific medicines are issues solely by the hospital pharmacy.
The hospital’s pharmacists are at your disposal for any questions you may have regarding your treatment or follow-up care and anything that you would like to know about your medication (dosage, side effects, etc.).
